Looking Back on a Colorful IDAHOT Week

The week of May 12th was entirely dedicated to IDAHOT 2025 – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. Under the banner of the United campaign, countless initiatives were launched to raise awareness and promote connection.

The Kick-Off
The week officially began on Monday, May 12, with the festive raising of the joint Pride flag on the campuses of the University of Antwerp, AP University of Applied Sciences, KdG University of Applied Sciences, and the Antwerp Maritime Academy. A powerful symbol that set the tone for a week full of meaningful moments.

Film and Connection
On Wednesday, May 14, we enjoyed Young Hearts – a touching Belgian coming-of-age film that moved many hearts. Later that evening, we gathered at the Queer Café in Café Den Draak, where the welcoming atmosphere created space for connection and exchange.

Stories That Move and Connect
Friday, May 16, offered room for reflection and dialogue. At the Cartoons City Cinema, Michel Malo shared his powerful life story about fleeing because of his sexual orientation. In the afternoon, Mister Gay Belgium, Imran Nawaz, spoke at Campus Zuid KdG. His lecture on faith and sexuality touched the audience and gave them plenty to reflect on.

Brussels Pride
The week concluded festively on Saturday, May 17, with Brussels Pride, which coincided with IDAHOT this year. Staff and students from the AUHA institutions proudly joined the colorful Pride March – a strong signal in support of inclusion, respect, and human rights.
A special highlight this year: the official recognition of Pride as intangible cultural heritage in Belgium, a milestone that further emphasizes the movement’s meaning and impact.

Onward to Antwerp Pride!
IDAHOT Week 2025 once again showed how important it is to create space for stories, connection, and solidarity. The engagement of students, staff, and partners was truly heartwarming and inspiring.
